Scent Work

Confidence. Enrichment. Fun.

Put your dog’s incredible nose to work with fun, rewarding scent-based activities. Scent work gives dogs the chance to search, problem-solve and use their natural abilities while building confidence along the way.

What is Scent Work?

Scent Work is an activity where your dog learns to search for, locate and indicate a specific target scent.

Rather than following a trail left by a person, your dog searches an area to work out where the target odour is hidden. They’ll learn to follow the scent to its source and communicate to you when they’ve found it.

Searches can take place in all sorts of environments, from boxes and everyday objects to rooms, outdoor areas and vehicles. As your dog’s skills develop, the searches can become more challenging, with different hide locations and scent problems for them to solve.

But Scent Work isn’t just about teaching your dog to find an odour. You’ll learn too, developing your ability to read your dog’s body language, recognise changes in behaviour and understand when they’re working towards the source of the scent.

It’s a brilliant way to give your dog a purposeful job while allowing them to use their incredible sense of smell, make decisions and solve problems independently.

No previous experience needed!

Why try Scent Work?

Scent Work gives your dog the opportunity to use their most powerful sense to solve problems and make their own decisions. It’s mentally enriching, accessible to a huge range of dogs and can be adapted to create just the right level of challenge for the individual in front of us.

Develops focus and problem solving

Your dog learns to search an area, work through distractions and follow scent to its source. As their skills develop, we can introduce new environments and increasingly interesting scent problems for them to figure out.

Builds confidence

Scent Work gives your dog opportunities to make their own decisions and solve problems independently. Each successful search can help build confidence in their own abilities, particularly for dogs who can be unsure in new situations.

Provides mental enrichment

Searching for a hidden scent puts your dog’s incredible nose and brain to work. Even short searches can provide a satisfying mental challenge and give your dog a purposeful outlet for one of their most natural behaviours.

Helps you read your dog

Scent Work isn’t just about what happens at the dog’s end of the lead. You’ll learn to spot subtle changes in their behaviour, understand how they search and recognise the clues that tell you they’re getting closer to the source of the scent.

Who is Scent Work for?

Pretty much any dog! Scent Work can be adapted to suit different breeds, ages, abilities and experience levels. Your dog doesn’t need to be naturally confident, super focused or already brilliant at using their nose. We can shape the challenge around the dog in front of us.

Whether you’ve got a busy dog who loves having a job to do, a cautious dog who could benefit from building confidence at their own pace, an older dog looking for a lower-impact activity, or you simply want to discover what your dog’s nose is capable of, Scent Work gives them an opportunity to search, solve problems and succeed.

A game that can grow with your dog

One of the best things about Scent Work is just how adaptable it can be. Searches can start simple and gradually become more challenging as you and your dog develop your skills.

We can change the environment, search area and scent problem to create the right level of challenge for your individual dog. There’s no need to race anyone else or work in a particular way. The goal is to help your dog become an increasingly confident and independent searcher while you become better at understanding what they’re telling you.

Your first Scent Work sessions

Our Introduction to Scent Work is a three-session, 1-to-1 programme, giving you and your dog the opportunity to learn the foundations of searching and begin developing your skills together.

Each session lasts around an hour and is tailored to the individual dog in front of us. Across the programme, we’ll gradually develop your dog’s understanding of the search game while helping you learn how to set up searches, recognise changes in your dog’s behaviour and support them as they work independently.

Learn the game

Building the foundations of searching and helping your dog understand that using their nose can lead to something rewarding.

Develop the search

Building on those foundations with searches tailored to your dog’s progress, helping them become more confident and systematic in how they work.

Build skills together

Developing both ends of the team, introducing new challenges for your dog while helping you become more confident at setting up searches and reading what your dog is telling you.

Scent Work FAQs

Got questions before you book? Here are a few of the things we’re asked most often about getting started with Scent Work.

Not at all! The three-session introduction is designed for complete beginners, so neither you nor your dog need any previous Scent Work experience. We’ll start with the foundations and progress at a pace that suits your individual dog.

You don’t need lots of specialist equipment to get started. Bring your dog, their usual harness or collar and lead, and plenty of small, tasty food rewards.

I’ll provide the Scent Work equipment we need during your sessions, so there’s no need to go out and buy a collection of mysterious little tins before you’ve even started!

There’s much more to Scent Work than simply hiding something and asking your dog to find it. Your dog is learning how to search and solve scent problems, while you’re learning how to set up searches, observe their behaviour and understand what they’re telling you.

Three sessions give us time to build those foundations gradually and develop your skills together rather than trying to squeeze everything into a single lesson.

During the programme, we’ll introduce your dog to a specific target odour and teach them that finding it is rewarding. The exact training process and odour used may vary, allowing the programme to be tailored to the individual dog and the skills we’re developing.

Absolutely. Scent Work can be particularly accessible for dogs who need a little more space or confidence, and because introductions are taught on a 1-to-1 basis, we can tailor the environment and searches around your dog’s individual needs.

There’s no pressure for your dog to interact with other dogs or people, and we can progress at a pace they’re comfortable with.

Scent Work is generally a lower-impact activity because much of the challenge comes from using the nose and brain rather than covering huge distances or working at speed.

Searches can also be adapted to suit the individual dog, making Scent Work an option worth exploring for older dogs or dogs who may not be suited to more physically demanding activities. I have lots of experience with dogs who have physical conditions, so can adapt accordingly.

Yes! One of the great things about Scent Work is that you can continue developing your skills away from your sessions. As you progress, you’ll learn how to create appropriate searches and practise safely with your own dog.

We’ll talk about what to practise and how to set things up so that you’re building on your dog’s learning rather than accidentally making things too difficult too quickly.

Once you’ve completed your introduction, you’ll have a foundation of skills that you can continue developing with your dog.

You can also continue with progression sessions, where we can build more challenging searches, explore different environments and develop both your dog’s searching skills and your ability to read and support them.
